Type of Couples Therapy Summary
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method are the two most widely used and research-supported approaches in couples counseling today. Both aim to improve communication, trust, and emotional connection.
Type of Couples Therapy Detail
Most couples therapists use one or both of these core therapeutic methods. EFT centers on understanding each partner’s emotional experience and strengthening attachment bonds. The Gottman Method, based on decades of observational research, equips couples with concrete tools to resolve conflicts and nurture their friendship and intimacy. At my Campbell office, I often draw from both EFT and the Gottman Method, adapting them to each couple’s unique relationship challenges. These approaches are practical, compassionate, and grounded in what really works to strengthen relationships.
